The Foundation introduces its limited edition cast bronze likeness of Red Auerbach, sculpted by Doug Orsini and produced by Royal Tara. The statue, a desktop replica of the famous Faneuil Hall piece, captures the essence that is uniquely Red. Proceeds from the statue sales will benefit the Red Auerbach Youth Coaches Training Center and the Boston Celtics Charitable Foundation. The Red Auerbach Youth Coaches Training Center, anticipated to open in the Fall 2001, will work with public and private partners to ensure the emotional and physical well-being of children in their participation in sports by providing effective training and education for youth sports organizers, coaches and parents.

The Red Auerbach Youth Foundation
Accomplishment and success take on many forms. While Red Auerbachs achievements with the Boston Celtics and as a Boston Celtic are legendary, he considers the formation of the Red Auerbach Youth Foundation to be his most significant contribution to the sports world. It makes me very proud that over the past 13 years we have provided opportunities for tens of thousands of local kids to enjoy the benefit of participation in sports. Not just basketball either, but a wide variety of sports including track & field, lacrosse, tennis, volleyball and double dutch jump rope says Auerbach. A firm believer in physical fitness and the regimen of athletics as molding tools, the creation of the Foundation caps Reds lifelong ambition to be a positive influence on the development of our youth. He recognizes the positive impact and invaluable life lessons that athletics and the team concept can offer to all children. Several 2000-2001 RAYF sponsored events and programs include:
Auerbach is the second-winningest coach in NBA history with a 938-479 (.662) record and has been recognized by having the Coach of the Year trophy named in his honor. In one of the most remarkable achievements in sports history, Auerbach guided the Celtics to nine NBA championships, including eight consecutive, from 1958-59 through 1965-66. He was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1968, and was selected to the NBAs 35th Anniversary team in 1981 as the Greates Coach in the History of the NBA by PBWA. Auerbach removed himself from the bench for the 1966-67 season to concentrate on his duties as general manager. Visit The |
