PROJECT ADOPTION
  
Project CHOICES - Teen Support Group Funding Amount $4000
  
Project Defined Currently, we have teens waiting for the opportunity to enroll in our CHOICES program. Due to a lack of funding, we are unable to offer this program to everyone interested. The $4000 requested would fund one year of a male or female support group in one of the the three boroughs we serve. CHOICES is a support group that helps teens deal with the many decisions they face every day. CHOICES focuses on issues of health and wellness as they relate to adolescence through self-esteem, self-awareness, communication, and leadership. Improving relationship management, peer pressure and formulating future goals through education and career preparation increases the opportunities teens are afforded. Facilitated by a trained Case Manager, CHOICES provides a safe place to discuss, share, and explore the issues that are most important to teens. Adolescence is a difficult period of life, filled with many difficult decisions – CHOICES provides an opportunity for teens to explore their potential, identify their goals, and work with their peers to educate themselves about the positive choices available to them. Group topics include: •Peer Relationships •Family Relationships •Respect and Responsibility •Teen Dating •Gender Behavior and Personal Safety •Peer Pressure/Conformity – drug and alcohol prevention; body image, self-esteem and self-confidence •Leadership and Communication Skills, Assertiveness •Cultural Awareness and Diversity •College Concerns and Preparation- application and financial aid process •Making Career Choices – interview and office etiquette, resume writing •Self Expression Currently Catholic Big Brothers has 4 CHOICES groups: one for girls in each of the boroughs we serve – Staten Island, Manhattan and the Bronx, and one group for boys in the Bronx. Each group of up to 15 teens meets every other week for approximately two hours each session.
  
Project Needs The $4000 would go to two major areas. Half of the total cost would be $2000, the cost of a trained group leader and appropriate supervision. The remaining $2000 would be for snacks, supplies and off-site group activities.
