PROJECT ADOPTION

Project Chicagoland Tutor/Mentor Volunteer Recruitment Funding Amount $5000

Project Defined Each year since 1995 the Cabrini Connections Tutor/Mentor Connection has organized a public awareness campaign intended to draw visibility, volunteers and donors to all of the non school tutoring and/or mentoring programs in the Chicago area. More than 100 programs actively participate in the campaign by hosting tables at recruitment fairs, participating in a planning committee, or by listing their organizational information in on a public TV bulleting board. More than 250 tutor/mentor sites are listed in the Program Locator Database at www.tutormentorexchange.net, which enables parens, volunteers and/or social workers to find contact information for tutor/mentor programs.

Project Needs More than 135,000 children in Chicago attend schools that are failing to meet state standards for reading and math. While the US No Child Left Behind law provides funds for professional tutoring service, these services do not provide mentoring and tutoring as part of a long term process, nor are they reaching the majority of children who need such services. Volunteer based tutor/mentor programs expand the number of caring adults and provide extra role models to compete with the negative influences of poverty. Funds are needed to help maintain the database, coordinate contact between programs, maintain a web based directory, and create public awareness that starts in early August and extends through the end of September each year.
