PROJECT ADOPTION

Project Sponsor A Group Home Funding Amount $2000

Project Defined Some people with disabilities require the temporary or long term supervision and support that can be provided in a group home in order for them to participate and contribute within their communities to the greatest extent possible. Advocates was founded in 1975 to attract state, federal, and other resources to address community need. From its first group home in Framingham in 1978 begun with federal resources. Advocates has grown, and now attracts over $26 million, employs over 650 people, who provide essential and emergency services to several thousands people throughout the Greater Metrowest Area. However, Advocates uses the majority of its resources to provide homes and support to 600 of the area's most impovished and disabled citizens with developmental disabilities and/or mental illness. Carrying the enormous burden of stigma associated with their disabilities, and therefore, frequently demoralized with cries of "NIMBY", these people engage daily in the heroic struggle to participate meaningfully in their communities. They work to overcome the challenges posed by their disability, while stimultaneously experiencing the fears and taunts of the misguided and misinformed.

Project Needs Fourteen years of level funding combined with the current budget crisis is placing enormous strain on human service providers. One of the ways we combat stigma is by keeping our group home property in great shape, attempting to be as good as any neighborhood home. This is costly, especially as our homes age. We are hoping to find an annual sponsor for each of our group homes. We are searching for churchs, synagogues, organizations and businesses that may be willing to assist through finances or volunteers with the maintenance of the interior and exterior of our propertry, and the disability of the residents. Thank you for your kind consideration regarding this project.
