PROJECT ADOPTION

Project Windows Restoration Funding Amount $1000

Project Defined The Conservancy is seeking donations to match a challenge grant in the amount of $82,000 to restore the windows and doors at the Graycliff Estate. Long bands of windows and doors were one of the key elements incorporated by Frank Lloyd Wright to give a feeling of transparency to his design, and to obscure the distinction between interior spaces and the inviting natural landscape that surrounds the property.

Project Needs The metal casement windows, steel doors and roll screens at Graycliff are in need of immediate restoration. There are at least 60 panes of broken glass and the exteriors of the frames are rusting noticeably from water penetrating deteriorated glazing compound and around moving parts. On the interior, the windows and doors have rusted from condensation and some operative bronze hardware is broken. A matching reimbursement grant in the amount of $82,138 has been secured from the New York State Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act for this project. An additional $82,138 is needed to restore the windows and doors to their original appearance. Donations will be used to: Abate lead/asbestos Remove deteriorated paint Replace broken glass and glazing Lubricate and repair hardware Repaint windows and doors Weatherstrip doors Replace/repair roll screens
